ICI Pune Centre Foundation Day Talk on Durability of Concrete

Dr J D Bapat delivered a talk on "Durability of Concrete" on 21 February, the Foundation Day of Indian Concrete Institute (ICI), Pune Centre. There were around 140 participants.

The talk covered the following aspects:
Strength and durability aspects of concrete, with mineral admixtures were presented. Aspects responsible for improvement in durability, such as interfacial transition zone (ITZ), permeability reduction, reduced temperature rise, long-term strength improvement were discussed. Importance of curing was be stressed. Focus was on durability of concrete with respect to resistance towards carbonation, alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR), chloride attack (corrosion), external sulphate attack, delayed ettringite formation (DEF). Mention was also be made of the relevant testing methods, such as carbonation depth measurement, accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT) for alkali aggregate reaction, rapid chloride permeability test (RCPT) for corrosion.

The lecture was followed by highly participative question-answer session for about 45 minutes.
